Back Country Heaven
As the end of April approached, our Snowmotions season based in the Arosa to Laax area had already finished, yet we still hadn’t been over to The Engadine!
Taking up an invitation from Claudio Manser from “True Values” to guide myself and two Snowmotions instructors around Diavolezza and Corvatsch, we found ourselves on a fine spring day waiting for the cable car to take us up to La Diavolezzas 2978 m summit.
With the impressive Piz Palu and Piz Bernina massif acting as a stunning backdrop we traversed in to The Val d’Arlas and then boarded a seemingly endless free ride down through wide powder fields & natural half pipes, ending up by the Bernina railway line on the Bernina pass.
The afternoon run down La Collina was majestic … more outrageous views, great snow and no other lines! In fact hardly any evidence of civilisation … just the car park and the cable car in the distance.
The following day on Corvatsch, some half hours drive from Diavolezza we started our runs from Graubuendens highest cable car at 3303 m. The snow was perfect and plentiful ! A couple of long, fast and empty pistes to warm up and then down one of the longest couloirs on the north face of Corvatsch with the emerald coloured lake Silvaplana sparkling in the valley below. An afternoon session spent “playing” in the huge Corvatsch and Furtschellas area left me with the impression that you could ride there for years and still find secret spots and un-ridden lines.
As an Englishman who has boarded in Graubuenden for over 10 years I can only say that “True Values” have got it right.
Good friends, awesome scenery, great snow conditions, safe free riding and peace and tranquillity in one of the finest Back Country Areas in Europe.
In English we say “ Wicked”
